GHS Graduation: "A Day To Celebrate And Pick Up Memories For The Coming Journey"

Some thoughts on graduation from Sheila Whitman of Long Hill Farm in Guilford, CT.

This was written and provided to Guilford Patch by Sheila Whitman of Long Hill Farm in Guilford, CT:

I am a recent resident of Guilford, but it didn’t take long to understand the history that natives enjoy. People get misty eyed, recalling past graduation processions, and hang congratulation banners all over town, for this newest group of grads. The town appears to truly embrace them, as they are launched into fresh and changing lives.

Yesterday, a couple of hours before graduation, I wove through traffic and noticed young people with their parents, running last minute errands in their summer finery. This was a day to celebrate and pack up memories for the coming journey.

In one store, I was struck by the lyrics of a song in the background, so fitting for today and graduations before. The perfect choice within a connected community: a nostalgic, mid-century song that says we’ve been where you are, this is an experience that extends through the generations.  It may seem like a trivial detail, but someone chose to play THIS song, rather than ignore the day as a turning point that resonates with many of us on a personal level:

Moments to remember

The New Year's Eve we did the town
The day we tore the goal post down
We will have these moments to remember

The quiet walks, the noisy fun
The ballroom prize we almost won
We will have these moments to remember

Though summer turns to winter
And the present disappears
The laughter we were glad to share
Will echo through the years

When other nights and other days
May find us gone our separate ways
We will have these moments to remember
