Guilford Breaks Ground On New, $92.2M High School

On June 6, hundreds of Guilford residents watched Guilford top brass break ground on a new high school that is set to open in the summer of 2015.

Two years ago, Guilford residents approved a $92.2 million appropriation to build a new high school. And on June 6, after getting everything ready, there was an official groundbreaking ceremony at the school.

"Today's a day, at times, that we thought would never happen. Today's a day that's a compilation of years of hard work by so many of Guilford's citizens," said First Selectman Joseph Mazza at the celebration, according to Shore Publishing. "Several years ago, Guilford had come to the realization that we needed to address not only the physical condition of the current building, but we also had to plan our facility that could accommodate the delivery of a changing education system. It has taken years of hard work, which required the support and the dedication of so many who are here today."

The 216,285 square-foot school is set to open in the summer of 2015 at the location of the existing high school and feature state-of-the-art technology to accommodate its 1,150 students. The ceremony attracted hundreds of residents, with several town officials giving speeches, according to Shore Publishing.

"The very foundation of a school and a school system is its community, and its communities partnerships with the school and this high school celebrates a partnership second to none," Guilford High School Principal Rick Misenti said at the ceremony, according to Shore Publishing. "On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students, thank you. Thank you to this community for building us a brand-new high school."
