Guilford 2018 Budget Referendum Results

Guilford residents went to the polls today regarding next year's budget request.

GUILFORD, CT - A proposed 2018-19 budget that called for a 2.38 percent hike in spending passed by a vote of 1,749 in favor to 1,434 opposed at a townwide referendum on Tuesday.

The proposed budget was $97,460,807. The previous year budget was $95,188,169. Thus the current proposal calls for an increase of $2,272,638.

The average tax increase from the proposed budget was 2.49 percent, counting debt service and operations.

Because there was a revaluation last year, some would have seen lower and some will see higher increases, depending on whether their property values were determined to have declined slightly (as most did), were steady, or increased (very few).

Town officials worked hard to put out the message that while the budget asked for would increase the tax rate by almost 6 percent, taxes would only increase by 2.49 percent on average because most assessments declined by over three percent.
