Guilford's Loving "Portley's Pile"

That big pile of millings of Boston Post Road in Guilford is being put to good use by Guilford Town Engineer Jim Portley.

The millings, which are being stored there temporarily by the company doing road work on nearby I-95, are being put to good use as a base layer for several town roads that needed to be repaired, Portley told the Guilford Board of Selectmen Monday morning.

Portley said the town is using the millings on West Lane near Indian Cove Road, and is planning to use in on a reconstruction project on Old Quarry Road. He said the town is also stockpiling some of the material for future use.

He said that the use of such sturdy material as part of these projects should reduce the amount of maintenance needed on these roads going forward. "We are optimistic it will stand up for a number of years," he said. The best part is that the town gets as much of the material as it needs, at no cost.

"We applaud you for your creativity," Selectman Gary MacElhiney said.

Portley said that whatever is not needed by the town will be hauled out beginning at the end of June.
