Hurricane Sandy Guilford: Official Update from Town Thursday Nov. 1st, 11:15 AM

Official statement of town activities, openings, cancellations and other vital information

Emergency Center is in full operation at the Fire Department.

 Power Service and Restoration:

Progress continues to me made concerning the restoration of electrical power. However, please be careful, as there are still power lines down. DO NOT TOUCH OR DRIVE OVER THEM.

 As of this morning, we are aware power has been restored;

 Yale New Haven Medical Center,

 Rt 1 from River Street, East to Madison. Most businesses and restaurants are operating.

 Parts of Soundview, Boston Street, and Water Street.

Key Town Facilities, including;

-      Town Hall

-        Library

-        Community Center

-        Several Guilford Public School Buildings have power restored, including the High School, Adams, Lakes, and Baldwin, along with the School Central Offices, which  are OPEN, however, Schools are CLOSED today for students. A decision will be made later today, concerning Friday opening for students.

CL&P has a significant number of crews in Guilford to “Make Safe”, doing tree work, and Restoring Power as quickly as possible.

 

Community Center:

The Community Center remains OPEN as an Emergency Shelter. 

For those needing it, breakfast, lunch and dinner is being provided.

Charging stations are available for electronic devices.

A limited number of shower facilities are available.

Emergency Overnight facilities are available.

If you plan to stay overnight (or evacuate for a longer period);

  • Bring toiletries and medications enough for 3 to 5 days
  • Linens,
  • Hand written phone numbers of family and friends
  • If you bring Animals, they must be in crates. Bring food and medications for animals enough for 3 to 5 day
Town Hall: Is OPEN. Call if you have any questions 203 453 8015. Power Stations are available to recharge cell phones. Wireless Internet is available as well.

Town Hall South and Youth and Family Services are OPEN as well

Guilford Library:

OPENED today (Thursday) with Power and Full Services. It will remain OPEN until 8PM tonight.

Guilford Public Schools:

GPS will be closed again today (Thursday), although power has been restored to; High School, Adams, Lakes and Baldwin.

Restoration work continues at the other schools.

 Athletic practices will resume today at the High School. 

A decision about School openings concerning Friday will be made later today.

Additional information will be available through the school communication vehicles.

 Branford YMCA:

Facility is OPEN with power and they are offering showers, charging stations and wifi services FREE of Charge.

 Businesses and Food Services:

MANY are now open along Rt. 1, EAST of River Street to Madison.

Several businesses are operating around the Green, some with full power, several using generators.

On the West Side of Town, Bishop’s Orchard’s is OPEN for Water distribution and for many of their other services.

 

Water Availability:

Water is available to be picked up by residents, bring your own containers to;

 Police Station (RT 77),

North Guilford Fire House

Community Center

Bishop’s Orchards

Guilford Lakes Golf Course

 

Waste Management:

These facilities will remain open through Saturday.

The Town Transfer Station is OPEN today to handle spoiled food and other waste.

The Stump Dump is OPEN today for tree and limb debris.

FEES are being waved today.

 

SAFETY REMINDER – GENERATOR Operation;

Please remember to only operate generators outdoors, well clear of enclosed spaces, including enclosed garages.

 A minimum of 20’ should be maintained from enclosed spaces so Carbon Monoxide gas will not get trapped inside homes or businesses.

Be especially careful with Propane Tanks, and extinguishing candles before going to bed.

Monitor Town Website  , Facebook, local media and radio.

We are updating information regularly.

Printed handouts of this information will be available at Town Hall, Community Center, Library, Police and Fire Stations.

Reverse 911 communications will used as needed.
