In Sandy's Aftermath, Guilford Begins to Recover
With road closures, downed wires, widespread power outages, schools closed, Guilford feels Sandy's impact
Stepping out into the sunlight yesterday morning in Guilford brought to light the damage sustained by Hurricane Sandy's blow to the town. Luckily, there were no reported fatalities or injuries due to the storm, but the impact is undeniable:
In the wake of the storm, Guilford Public Schools opted to cancel classes for Wednesday, October 31st.
As of last night, Guilford town officials are not 'cancelling' Halloween, however, they highly recommend that residents wait until next week to celebrate. Town Selectman Joseph Mazza will not make any decisions until later today, but he spoke with Guilford Patch last night about Halloween's status in town.

Currently, there are 8,011 CL&P customers without power in Guilford, about 74%. At this point in time, it seems that there are two CL&P crews working in Guilford to test the safety of downed wires and begin restoration. There have been no estimations as to when restoration can be expected.
The Guilford Green suffered a huge hit from the storm. There are several downed trees on the Green, and much debris. Guilford Patch was able to survey the damage and photograph the space.

Hurricane Sandy impacted Guilford in many ways, but the public water supply remains safe. Guilford's Public Health Director spoke to Guilford Patch last night about water supply conditions, as well as the current ban on shellfish beds.
Most of Rt. 1 is still without power, but there are several restaurants and retailers up and running to provide resources for residents.
The Emergency Shelter at Guilford Community Center is available for those who need a shower, a place to sleep, a warm meal, or simply power to charge phones and laptops.
