New Britain Latest To Ban Plastic Bags In Grocery Stores

You can add the city of New Britain to the growing list of Connecticut communities that have taken action on banning plastic bags.
The New Britain Common Council unanimously passed a resolution Wednesday that will prohibit the distribution of single-use carry-out plastic bags.
The resolution will be effective six months after its adoption to give retailers a chance to dispose of their current single-use plastic bags and convert to alternative materials.

New Britain joins several municipalities in Connecticut and across the country that have attempted to curb their carbon and environmental footprint through bans on nonreusable plastic bags.
The issue has come up in several other area towns in recent months - including Branford, Guilford, North Branford and Hamden.

Meanwhile, there are also bills in front of the state legislature calling for a statewide ban.
At the same time those efforts recently got a boost as grocery giant Big Y, which has stores in all of those towns, announced they would ban single use plastic bags as of 2020.
National chains Costco and Aldi, which both have stores in Connecticut, currently also do not provide free single-use plastic bags.
