Man, 32, Killed After Barge Overturns in Guilford: Police

Eight people went out on a boat but only seven returned, according to reports.

GUILFORD, CT — One person is dead after a barge carrying eight people overturned in Guilford Saturday, police said. At 2:20 p.m. Saturday the police and fire departments responded to the Guilford Yacht Club at 379 Whitfield St. after a barge overturned, resulting in several people in the water, police said.

Fire Department rescue divers conducted a search of the area after it was determined that one man aboard the barge when it overturned was missing, police said. The divers located a 32-year-old man in the water who was determined to be deceased at the scene, police said.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death. This investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard and OSHA. The victim's name has not yet been released.
