2 Teens Seriously Burned After Starting Fire, Hamden Fire Officials Say

One child remains in the hospital's burn unit and surgery may be needed, the fire department said.

HAMDEN, CT — Two teens sustained serious burn injuries after they started a fire, fire officials said.

At 6 p.m. Friday, the Hamden Fire Department responded to a call regarding a brush fire behind #50 Stratton Court. The incident involved two 13-year-old boys who reportedly started a fire and added gasoline, which led to a larger fire and significant burn injuries to both children, fire officials said.

Crews found the brush fire had been extinguished prior to their arrival. However, two patients were reported at an address on Braeside Drive, and both teens were treated by Hamden paramedics and transported, one to Yale Pediatric Hospital and the other to Bridgeport Hospital.

"As we reflect on this incident, we urge parents to educate their children about the dangers of fire and flammable materials. It’s essential to lead by example, ensuring that flammable substances are stored securely and that children understand that fire is a tool, not a toy," the Fire Department said in a statement. "Children should always ask for adult supervision when engaging with anything that can create a flame. If they see unsafe behavior, they must feel empowered to speak up. Together, let's prioritize fire safety to prevent future incidents and keep our community safe."
