Alleged Hamden Bank Robber: 'This is All Because of a Girl.'

Hamden's Robert Raymond, 67, was put on suicide watch Wednesday after being arrested for allegedly trying to rob three banks on Tuesday.

A 67-year-old Hamden man who was charged with robbing two town banks said he was desperate after being duped out of a "large sum of money," blamed a girl for the robberies and was put on suicide watch Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Robert Raymond, 67, of 109 Augur Street, was arrested after he allegedly robbed two banks on Dixwell Avenue in Hamden. He allegedly gave bank employees a note - signed "the polite bandit" - saying he had a bomb and told them to fork over cash. He was arrested outside of a Webster Bank in Hamden after a dye pack exploded, which covered him in red ink, according to police.

Wednesday, at his first day in court, Presiding Judge Philip Scarpellino ordered Raymond be put on suicide watch and to be treated for depression, according to the New Haven Register. The Register also reports that Raymond told police he was recently duped out of a large sum of money by a friend, and he robbed the banks "because of a girl."

Raymond is retired but still works part-time, according to the Register. He was held in lieu of $150,000 bond and his next court appearance is Tuesday.
