Crews Battle Fire At Former Hamden Middle School Building
A large fire that was extinguished in a classroom had spread to the roof of the abandoned building, according to officials.
HAMDEN, CT — Firefighters extinguished a fire at the former Hamden Middle School property on Newhall Street on Wednesday night, according to officials.
Crews responded around 8 p.m. on Sept. 3 to a report of heavy smoke coming from the abandoned building on the former middle school property at 550 Newhall Street, according to officials.
Officials said the battalion chief reported heavy fire coming from the third-floor windows of the building.

“Firefighters entered the building and performed a search of the classrooms on that floor,” officials wrote in a news release. “They proceeded to extinguish a large fire in one of the rooms. The fire spread to the roofline above the classroom. Firefighters on the roof overhauled the roof and extinguished the fire that had spread to that portion of the roof. No injuries to firefighters were reported.
“The former middle school property has been the site of numerous fires and acts of vandalism in recent years. A perimeter fence has been installed but unfortunately has been breached in some locations.”

The New Haven and North Haven fire departments provided station coverage to Hamden while firefighters battled the blaze, according to officials.
