Drive-Through Cannabis Retail Business Pitched In Hamden

The site is currently the home of a local deli/pizzeria. The developer is seeking a special permit approval.

HAMDEN, CT —Nutmeg Hamden JV LLC is seeking a special permit for adult use cannabis at 3825 Whitney Ave. The site is currently occupied by P & M Fine Foods, an Italian food market and eatery.

Patrick Johnson, who represents Nutmeg Hamden LLC., told the Planning and Zoning Commission at its Oct. 25 meeting that they have opened two stores in Connecticut, and they are working to open two more before Thanksgiving, according to meeting minutes.

"He also said that they will be very good partners in the community," according to meeting minutes. "He explained that the average time in store is 5-7 minutes per customer, customers can order online, and they will also have a drive through as well. They will have 5 registers and 8-9 staff members onsite and a guard on the outside, which is not required by the state, but they do this as a safety measure."

"They will have three ID security check points, no one under 21 will be allowed in the store. All the products are in an airtight container and no products are on display, no consumption on site either. The hours of operation will be 9-8 Mon-Sat and 10-5 on Sundays," meeting minutes state.

The facility will only cater to recreational users, and the proposal includes a drive-through window. Some members expressed concern about the proposed drive-through window.
