Hamden Building Dept. Undergoes Major Overhaul

Changes will continue Mayor Leng's goal of streamlining and improving customer service.

Mayor Curt Balzano Leng is pleased to announce that the Hamden Building Department is undergoing a major overhaul. The Hamden Legislative Council recently authorized the upgrade of the Electrical Inspector and Plumbing Inspector positions to the classification of “Assistant Building Official,” which will serve to improve the operational effectiveness of the department. The Building Department also recently adopted a new operating schedule designed to afford Hamden residents and business owners enhanced access to building officials. These changes will continue Mayor Leng’s goal of streamlining and improving customer service, while also increasing the revenue producing potential of one of Hamden’s key department.

The Building Department is now open at 7:30 a.m. and will remain open until 4:30 p.m. each weekday. Residents and business owners seeking to acquire various permits will now have an additional hour and a half each day to file their paperwork. Permitting hours have been extended (from the previous schedule of 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.) to the current schedule of 7:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. The goal of this extension is to better accommodate the needs of homeowners, business owners, and contractors.

Commenting on the extension of permitting hours and the reclassification of vital staff positions, Mayor Curt Balzano Leng said, “We have listened to the business community who asked for improvements to our building department and worked hard to begin implementing these changes. Hamden’s goal is to make our building permitting process easier and more accessible for all, and I am confident that these adjustments will provide Hamden’s business owners and residents a more streamlined, effective and convenient permitting process.”
