Hamden Deputy Police Chief Named To Top Spot In Old Saybrook

The deputy chief has been appointed as Old Saybrook's new police chief.

HAMDEN, CT — Hamden Deputy Police Chief William Onofrio has been appointed as the new Chief of Police in Old Saybrook.

Onofrio’s appointment is effective Oct. 1, according to Hamden Police Chief E.P. Reynolds.

“Deputy Chief Onofrio has been an outstanding leader within our department and a trusted partner in advancing our mission of public safety,” Reynolds said in a statement announcing Onofrio’s appointment. “I am proud to see his talents and leadership recognized by another community. This is not only a win for Old Saybrook, but is, also, a source of pride for our department as we continue to see our leaders grow and make a difference beyond our own town.”

Onofrio is the latest in the line of Hamden officers going on to lead their own police departments.

Reynolds said that he finds great satisfaction in preparing others to serve as police chiefs, and emphasized that Onofrio’s departure wasn’t the result of any internal issues, according to a news release.

“This appointment reflects the caliber of leadership we have in our department,” Reynolds said. “It is a testament to the excellence of our personnel, not a reflection of any negativity. While we will miss Deputy Chief Onofrio, we celebrate this achievement and look forward to continuing our strong leadership tradition within the Hamden Police Department.”

The department will announce interim leadership plans in the coming days and remains committed to providing exceptional service to the residents of Hamden, the news release states.
