Hamden Library To Host 'The City We Became' Book Discussion

Calling all science fiction and fantasy readers! Please join the Hamden Public Library’s book discussion group for a discussion of N.K. Jemisin’s 2020 New York Times bestselling novel "The City We Became." This discussion will be held on Zoom Monday, February 27th, 2023 at 6:30 PM with facilitation by reference librarians Morgan Gagne and Dave Scanlon.

A winner of the British Science Fiction Association’s Best Novel award, "The City We Became" is the first installment in N.K. Jemisin’s "Great Cities" series. It is an imaginative, stunning tribute to New York City and speculative fiction genres. In an alternate reality where the world’s cities are alive with personalities and identities of their own, five ordinary New Yorkers find themselves unexpectedly turned into living and breathing avatars of New York, each one representing one of the city’s five boroughs. The five avatars find themselves targeted and challenged by ancient foe. By combining their given abilities with their intellect, each avatar will have to work together to protect and defend their city, fellow citizens, culture, and identity. Praise for "The City We Became" includes the following from NPR: "['The City We Became'] is a love letter, a celebration and an expression of hope and belief that a city and its people can and will stand up to darkness, will stand up to fear, and will, when called to, stand up for each other."
