Help Kick Start Hamden's Community Garden Saturday

This Saturday the United Way will hold an organizational meeting for anyone interested in managing a community garden.

United Way of Greater New Haven is seeking families and individuals to help invigorate safe public spaces that allow residents to provide themselves with healthy, nutritious, delicious and affordable food.

This opportunity encourages a healthy lifestyle and brings families, friends and neighbors together in a positive and welcoming environment, building community and opportunities for neighborhoods to grow healthful foods.

Who can garden? All are welcome (ages 5+)! No previous connection with the garden or gardening experience is required.

What if I don't know how to garden? Come learn! Most community garden volunteers are new to gardening when they first start. Don't let lack of experience prevent you from getting involved; the best (and most fun) way to learn is to work with other gardeners.

What kinds of things will volunteers do? Most volunteers will be asked to do routine maintenance, including clearing debris, pruning and weeding, clearing beds and amending the soil, prepping and planting beds, pest management, mulching, and other related garden tasks. Opportunities to build compost piles, garden beds, repair garden fences and trim trees/shrubs may also exist.

Volunteers should be able to handle light physical activity, including bending, lifting and kneeling.

Volunteers should wear comfortable closed toe shoes, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses. Bring your favorite garden tool. Gloves will be available.

Volunteers should plan to meet at United Way's 370 James St., 4th floor offices in New Haven this Saturday, April 27 at 9:30 a.m. for a light breakfast, assignment confirmation, etc. The garden manager will assign all volunteers tasks for the workday. We request youth ages 5-17 remain under the supervision of their parent or guardian at all times.

How do I sign up? Just fill out an online form at uwgnh.org! For additional information, contact Darlene Butler, Community Services Coordinator at 203-562-5129 x111.
