Quinnipiac University Hosts Panel Discussion on Fake News

From QU: Experts from various disciplines at Quinnipiac University will gather for the panel discussion, “Real Talk About Fake News,” on Wednesday, April 5, from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Clarice L. Buckman Theater at Quinnipiac, 275 Mount Carmel Ave. This event is free and open to the public.

“While inaccuracy in news reporting is not new, public awareness and the usage of the term ‘fake news’ has exploded in recent months,” said Matt Wilcox, director of the Edward and Barbara Netter Library at Quinnipiac and panel moderator. “The surge of fake news claims is a great opportunity to dig into topics of authority, confirmation, bias, propaganda and to look at them from various cross disciplinary viewpoints.”

The panel will include: Margarita Diaz, associate professor of journalism, who will discuss “I Blame Jon Stewart: The Daily Show and the Emergence of Fake News,” Matthew Flaherty, outreach and instruction librarian, “Separating Fact from Fiction: Tips for Evaluating News,” James Stodder, visiting professor of accounting, “Russia’s Method: Flooding the Zone,” and Sharlene Walbaum, professor of psychology, “Cognitive Dynamics of ‘I Knew it All Along’”
