Redevelopment Project Eyed For Former Spring Glen Hardware Site In Hamden: Report
The property owner is eyeing a redevelopment project for the site of the former historic hardware store, which was demolished last year.
HAMDEN, CT — The property owner of the site that formerly housed the historic Spring Glen Hardware store is eyeing a redevelopment project that includes a mixed-use space with apartments and shops, according to the New Haven Register.
The Spring Glen Hardware & Appliance store closed in late 2022 after 74 years in business. The building at 1666 Whitney Avenue in Hamden demolished in June 2024 after the structure was “determined to be unsafe by both the property owner’s structural engineer as well as Hamden’s Building Officials,” the mayor’s office said at the time.
The Register reports the property owner — Carol Horsford, founder of Farnam Realty Group in New Haven — is envisioning a complete rebuild of the site with two commercial units on the first floor and six apartments upstairs.

The project, which Horsford described as still in the early stages, would require zoning approval from the town, according to the Register.
