Sacred Heart Academy Wins SCC Basketball Title, Beats Rival Hamden

Sacred Heart Academy won its fourth overall SCC girls basketball title with a win over rival Hamden on Wednesday at Quinnipiac University.

HAMDEN, CT — Sacred Heart Academy defeated Hamden 56-43 to claim the SCC girls basketball championship Wednesday night at the M&T Bank Arena at Quinnipiac University.

The town rivals faced off in the championship game for the third year in a row, with Hamden taking the last two titles before Sacred Heart reclaimed the crown on Wednesday. The Green Dragons won last year’s championship by a score of 82-58 and also beat the Sharks in the 2023 final, by a score of 70-57.

Hamden also won the conference championship in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

Lyla D’Errico scored a team-high 16 points to lead Sacred Heart to its fourth overall SCC championship, according to GameTimeCT.com. Molly Gunning added 11 points and Madelyn Burke had 10 for the Sharks.

Sacred Heart won the SCC championship in 2022, and also claimed the D-2 title in 2021 when two tournaments were held due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Aunee Brookshire led Hamden with 13 points, while Kamora Moore, Tailor Haynes, and Nylah Beyah each had seven points apiece.

Both teams will next play in the Class LL state tournament, and could square off in the second round if Hamden beats New London in the opening round.

Hamden beat Sacred Heart in last year’s Class LL championship game.
