Water Key To Surviving Heat Wave

Dealing with 90+ degree heat is bad enough. But what if your workplace can be a good 20 degrees hotter than that?

There's only one way to handle it - water, and lots of it.

That's how David Irving, the owner of Smokey's Char Grill BBQ at 3810 Whitney Ave., handles his broiling kitchen.

It gets above 100 degrees in his kitchen, where he serves up pulled pork, brisket and smoked chicken six days a week.

And he's not alone as temperatures soared into the 90s all week.

"I've got a truck load of water bottles," said Reggie Donetto, who was on the job Friday doing lawn work at a home on Shepard Avenue.

"I've been doing this for a long time, but this has been brutal," he said. He handles it by keeping a cooler full of water bottles in ice nearby at all times, he said.

"Keep hydrated - that's the key," he said.

The heat is supposed to continue through Saturday, with relief in sight on Sunday, when temperatures are forecast to reach into the 80s.

"The heat has been bad," said Lorraine Eaton, who was walking her lab mix Maddie Friday afternoon. "But I'll take it over snow any day."
