Daily Five: Community Garden Work Day Is Today

Five things to know on Friday, June 29.

 

1. Today, there’s a chance of showers and thunderstorms before noon or it will be partly sunny, with a high near 90, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight may be partly cloudy, with a low around 67.

2. People are meeting at noon today on Shewville Road at the to begin work on a new community garden. All are welcome to contribute, show up with shovels and be ready to get your hands dirty.

3. On this day in history in 1972 the Supreme Court ruled by a 5-4 vote that the death penalty was unconstitutional. They called practices of the day “arbitrary and capricious” but did give suggestions for making corporal punishment constitutional. Gary Gilmore, in 1977, was the first person to be executed constitutionally.
