Daily Five: Scholarship Applications Due Next Week

Five things to know on Thursday, April 12.

1. NOAA.gov says today will have “scattered showers, mainly after 10am. Cloudy, with a high near 56” and tonight will start to clear up and have a low around 37.

2. The Historical Society is offering it’s annual $1,000 scholarship for a graduating senior attending Ledyard High School. Qualifications rely heavily on community involvement and, ideally, an interest in history. Applications are due April 20, and can be found on the society’s website and guidance offices.

3. The Town Council appointed the following members to the new WPCA: Terry Jones, James Diaz, Mike Cherry, Edward Lynch, and Julian Lupienski. Anthony Saccone and Donald Cameron were appointed as alternates.

4. Walter Majcher has been farming the old Clark Farm property for years and has entered into a lease agreement with the town to pay $4,570 a year to farm the land. As part of the lease, Majcher agreed to mow and take care of the unfarmed land on the property.

5. The blight ordinance is still being worked on. Steve Eichelberg said his focus is on bank-owned properties that are overgrown and neglected. He said that there's nothing in the zoning regulations now that require the owner of an uninhabited house to maintain the property, which is what he hopes to address with the ordinance.
