Gales Ferry Fire Displaces Family of Five

Residents were forced to leave their home late Saturday.

A late-night fire at 12 Nutmeg Drive displaced a family of five Saturday.

According to the Gales Ferry Volunteer Fire Company’s Facebook page, crews  from both Gales Ferry and Ledyard Fire Company #1 arrived immediately to the residence but did not have a sufficient supply of water due to the fact that there were no fire hydrants in that area of town.

The site says, “due to this area of town not being hydrant protected, water had to be shuttled by water tanker trucks. Tanker's from Poquetanuck Fire Co., Preston City Fire Co., Center Groton Fire Co., and East Great Plains Fire Co. (Norwich) were called to assist and provide water.”

The house was “heavily damaged” and uninhabitable afterward. The family is in the care of the Red Cross, which found alternate housing for them and provided them with comfort kits.
