Harsher Driver Penalties Sought to Help Bicyclists

Proposed legislation would hopes to make the roads safer for pedestrians and bicyclists by penalizing drivers that injure or kill other people using the roads.

According to the Hartford Courant, the legislation is backed by “environmental groups and transit advocates” who tried – but failed – to get the laws passed in 2010. The legislation is being considered by the transportation committee of the General Assembly.

The proposed laws would, according to the Courant, punish dangerous drivers with retraining, mandatory community service and a totaling up to $5,000.
