Ledyard Fire Chiefs Want You to Call 911

Calls for emergencies may go unanswered if the station is unmanned if volunteers are already on a call.

Ledyard fire stations are experiencing a “surge in calls to the stations to report incidents” when really, residents should call 911. According to Ledyard Fire Chief John Doucette, business phone numbers should not be used to report emergency calls, or any type of call for that matter.

“The danger in this is that the stations are not always manned or we might be on a call already,” he said. “We do not want calls to go unanswered in an emergency”

911 operators are trained professionals who will ask pertinent questions to get you the help needed in the shortest time possible.  In emergency situations, minutes, even seconds, can make a crucial difference – that’s why early intervention is critical.  Call 911 first, then family and friends as necessary.

Call 911:

ü  For all emergencies that require police, fire or medical assistance to protect lives or property.

ü  To report a crime in progress.

ü  To report a fire.

ü  If someone is injured or suddenly becomes ill.

ü  To report a missing person, in particular a child or elderly person.

ü  For roadside emergencies and/or motor vehicle accidents, use your cell phone to call 911.

Do NOT call 911:

  • To ask for phone numbers.
  • To ask for traffic status.
  • To report a power outage.
  • To ask for directions.

When in doubt, always call 911.  Specially trained 911 operators will determine whether or not the situation is an emergency and requires assistance.  Remember to speak clearly and calmly and answer all questions posed by the operator.  Tell the operator the nature of the emergency and its location.  Teach children to call 911 only in an emergency.

Business phone numbers for the Ledyard Fire Company, Gales Ferry Fire Company and Ledyard Volunteer Emergency Squad (Ambulance) are not always answered.  These contact numbers should never be used in an emergency or to request services for any type of incident.  The emergency services in the Town of Ledyard are staffed by volunteers and using our business numbers to report an incident is extremely unreliable.

Please call 911 for emergencies or call (860) 464-1138 to speak with our dispatchers.  Please do not call the fire station directly to report incidents and do not provide the fire station phone numbers to alarm companies.
