Ledyard Police Warn Of Telephone Scam

Local resident was victim of telephone scam, police remind residents to beware.

 

The was contacted by a resident who had become the victim of a scam when she received a call from a male who identified himself as her grandson and stated that he was in Mexico and had been in a motor vehicle accident with a rental vehicle, according to a press release

The “grandson”  said he needed $4,500 sent to him.

Another male then got on the phone and identified himself as Sgt Miller from the U.S. Council. Sgt Miller explained how the victim could send the money utilizing MoneyGram at Wal Mart.

The victim was then provided a number to contact Sgt Miller back at after the money had been wired. The victim immediately went to Wal Mart and wired the $4,500 dollars and then contacted Sgt Miller at the number provided. He advised her it would take approximately one hour to receive the money and that he would call once it had been received.

After a short time she received a phone call indicating the money had been received but later learned that her grandson was not in Mexico. The number utilized in this scam is out of Quebec and is no longer in service.

This incident remains under investigation.

The Ledyard Police Department wants to remind residents that scams of this nature are extremely common and that residents should not wire money based upon unconfirmed telephone calls or e-mails. Please contact your local law enforcement agency with any concerns or questions about telephone scams.
