Ledyard Resident Targeted By Mega Draw Scam

Ledyard Police Department warns of check cashing scams.

Ledyard Police are warning residents of scams that request “processing fees” or small amounts of money in exchange for a larger sum.

According to Ledyard Police Lt. Michael Finkelstein, a Ledyard resident received a correspondence in the US mail indicating that she had won $150,000 from USA Mega Draw.

The letter included a check, made out to the resident in the amount of $4,200 to help pay a "processing fee" of $3,200, which she had to pay in order to get the $150,000.

Scams such as this are frequent and widespread, said Finkelstein, and residents should never participate in any scenario in which funds are requested in exchange for larger winnings. This includes situations, such as this, where a check is enclosed to cash.

Finkelstein said, “ultimately the check, which is written fraudulently from a legitimate company, bounces and the victim is held responsible for the amount paid to them.”
