Three Years To Go, Sophomores Raising Money For Senior Events (with VIDEO)

Fundraisers Now Will Defray Cost Of Proms, Senior Banquet, Caps And Gowns In 2014.

The Ledyard High School class of 2014 isn't letting summer vacation distract them from taking care of school business.  The sophomore class officers have plans to get an early start on fundraising for their junior and senior proms, senior banquet and other school events.

"I went to a junior prom this year and it was $50," said Ari Fustini, the class vice president. "It would be nice if they don't cost that much."

There was no budget for advertising the donation-only event so class officers used Facebook to spread the word.

"My day yesterday basically consisted of sitting at the computer inviting everyone," said Fustini. "Everyone's page was blowing up with this event."

And, there was no lack of on-site advertising.

"We have signs and we jump around with big smiles on our faces and yell car wash," said Olivia Jones, class president.

The money raised by each graduating class will cut and defray the costs of school events like prom, a senior banquet and dues that cover their caps in gowns, said Ann Finnegan, a teacher Ledyard High School and mother of one of the event organizers.

With hopes to have more than $2,000 in the bank before their junior year, the sophomores have another car wash scheduled on July 22. The car wash will be at Kartway on Route 12 in Gales Ferry from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., just in time for the evening commute.
