6/24: Here's the round-up for today's game (#2): LEDYARD 8, HEBRON 4

In the second game of district play, Ledyard's U10 team defeated Hebron 8-4 and advanced to the next round, in the winner's bracket, on Wednesday, June 27th at 5:30 pm.

It was an incredible game, with both teams hitting great and amazing defense all around.

Highlights (unofficial; based on my notes):

Riley Gagnon (#4) starting pitcher (3 innings)

Cade Walters (#9) pitched 3 innings, with 3 strikeouts.

Although Hebron was able to get their bats on the pitches, Ledyard’s defense kept them to only scoring 4 runs.

In the bottom of the second Ledyard made three consecutive outs at 1st base

In the bottom of the third, Hebron scored 3 runs, but Ledyard (who was up by 4) was able to keep the tying run from scoring by a strong throw from right field to home plate, tagging out the lead runner and ending the inning

In the bottom of the sixth, with the score 8-3 in Ledyard’s favor, Hebron scored a run with multiple base runners and no outs.

Then, Ledyard’s catcher, Chris Medina, combined with 3rd baseman Andrew Boudah to pick off the lead runner trying to get to home base for the 1st out.

Hebron then hit the ball to pitcher Cade Walters, who threw to Matt Thornton at first base for the 2nd out.  Matt then noticed the base runner at second trying to go to third and fired a bullet to Andrew Boudah who applied a perfect tag to finish the double play, ending the game!

Other highlights:

Andrew Boudah (#6):  hit 4-4 with an RBI.

Chris Medina (#21):  hit 1-1, with an RBI bunt and a great pop-up catch behind the plate.

Brendan Thornton (#46): hit 1-3 with an RBI double.

Cade Walters (#9): hit 2-3, including an in-the-park homerun

Nick Bailey (#3):  hit 2-3, with an RBI double.

Elliot Smith (#1): hit 1-1

John Gebhard (#22): hit 1-1

James Laconico (#8): hit 1-4

Andrew Bourguignon (#37): hit 1-1 with an RBI single

6/23: Notes on Saturday's game: LEDYARD 10, MARLBOROUGH 4

In the first round of district play, Ledyard's U10 team defeated Marlborough 10-4 and advanced to the next round, in the winner's bracket, tomorrow at 1 pm against Hebron.

The team came out strong, as always, playing like the defending champions that they are!

Highlights (based on my notes):

Cade Walters (#9) pitched 3 outstanding innings, with a total of 6 strikeouts.
Riley Gagnon (#4) pitched 2 innings, with 3 strikeouts.
James Laconico (#8) finished the game with 1 inning and 1 strikeout.

Chris Medina (#21):  hit 2-3, including a great out made while playing catcher; he caught a runner trying to steal third base by throwing a bullet to 3rd baseman Andrew Boudah (#6) who applied the tag.

Matt Thornton (#2): hit 1-2 with a double in the 3rd inning that set up Ledyard scoring the first 2 runs of the game.

Cade Walters (#9): hit 2-3 with 2 RBIs in the 3rd inning

Elliot Smith (#1): hit 1-2 with an RBI double in the 4th inning

Brendan Thornton (#46): hit 2-4, including a 2 RBI double in the 5th inning

James Laconico (#8): hit 2-4, including an RBI single that started off a 6-run 5th inning for Ledyard, and a single in the 6th, followed by stealing 2nd, 3rd, and home base, scoring the team's 10th run

John Gebhard (#22): hit 1-1 with and RBI single

Andrew Bourguignon (#37): hit 1-1 with an RBI double

Nick Bailey (#3): played incredible defense, including catching two long fly balls to right field in the same inning

The game was well-matched, with excellent defense on both sides, and remaining scoreless through 2 innings.  After Ledyard broke the game open in the top of the 5th inning, the Marlborough team rallied in the bottom of the 5th, scoring 4 runs in quick succession to try to overcome the 9-0 score.  Ledyard was able to remain on top and win the game.

We are all looking forward to the continuing challenges of the tournament!
