Which Road in Ledyard Needs a Speed Bump?

We asked Patch readers on Facebook what streets they thought needed a speed bump. Find out what your neighbors told us.

LEDYARD, CT - Over 9,000 fatalities occurred nationally during 2014 due to speeding according to the latest statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The data also shows a correlation between a driver’s age and the likelihood of a speed-related accident. As the age of a driver increases, their risk of being in an accident decreases. Men are also more likely to be at the wheel during a speeding accident, according to the study.

While the number of speed-related fatalities have continually decreased since 2005, speeding still remains an issue in many of our Patch communities, including Ledyard. Readers suggested everything from increased police presence to more stop signs to building less housing to keep traffic at bay.

  • "Avery Hill Road. People think they're Bo and Luke Duke where they come flying down it as if they're driving the General Lee..."
  • "Long Cove Rd. in Gales Ferry. The speed is posted (suggested speed?) at 25, but they go between 40 and 50. Especially the motorcycles in the area. We've already had a few accidents because of the speeding."
  • "214, hands down. In fact, it could use quite a few speed bumps; plural."
  • "Anywhere in the Highlands - this is a neighborhood and people drive as if they are going down a main road. People are walking with their dogs, jogging, strolling with their babies, kids scootering and biking...the speeders and careless drivers don't think the police will be around so they let loose, peeling rubber, whipping around corners!"
  • "214 - Almost a head-on collision twice just today alone and it isn't even noon! Cars passing you on the bad corners. The speed limit is for a reason, and everyone is in a rush! From 117 to Rt 2 it's so bad I'm scared to drive it now. I've never seen it this bad before! Lived here all my life and it's gotten to the point I don't want my kids driving at all on that road!"
  • "Hurlbutt Road in Gales Ferry Village could use speed bumps. It's scary for kids playing."
  • "No speed bumps. I don't want to be throwing my money out every year for repairs on my car. Maybe stop lights."
  • "Colonel Ledyard Hwy...from the high school to 184. Cars fly down this road like it's the highway!"
