Burying Downtown Madison Utility Line Project Delayed

First Selectman Tom Banisch said he isn't happy about the delays but that there is really nothing that can be done about it at this time.

MADISON, CT - First Selectman Tom Banisch isn’t happy about it but he is resigned to the fact that the long-anticipated plan to bury utility lines downtown as part of of the renovated downtown center project is not going to be finished as soon as was hoped.

A combination of weather, legal issues and logistics the first selectman said is the reason for the delays.

Banish said remaining easements on the north side of the Boston Post Road that need to be agreed to are being negotiated - and haven’t moved as quickly as he would have liked.

Banisch said additionally, Eversource has determined that a transformer outside of the bank building is out of code and must be replaced.

“Basically, the problem is one of a legal nature (the easements) and logistics (weather),” the first selectman said.

“If we got the easements signed now, we couldn’t get the poles out before July 4th, and we don’t want to do that work during the summer (crowds),” Banisch added. “We also have work to do on the south side, and that includes Eversource replacing a transformer, which needs to be planned and executed.“
