Daniel Hand Finally Captures Boys Basketball State Championship

Nearly 50 years after its last appearance in a state title game, the Tigers broke through in convincing fashion with a 56-39 win Saturday.

UNCASVILLE, CT — It took nearly half a century since Daniel Hand's last appearance in a boys basketball state championship game to finally win the school's elusive first title, but it happened Saturday in a big way.

The Tigers raced to a 19-5 first-quarter lead and assumed a commanding 34-10 lead by halftime, breezing to a 56-39 win over top-seeded Kolbe Cathedral in the Division III championship matchup at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Hudson Geremia paced the third-seeded victors with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Daniel Hilmer had 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. Chase Geremia added nine points and six rebounds.

Najimi George led all scorers with 19 points for the Cougars, while Tyrell Staples-Santos contributed 10.

Daniel Hand has previously competed in two Class M finals, falling short in 1970 and 1974.
