Madison Firefighter Battling ALS Savoring Motherhood
Madison resident with ALS taking on challenges of ALS and mom life.
MADISON--They live in a typical, toddler-proofed home. Toys and giggles abound. But this Madison mom of a one-year-old is far from ordinary.
Amanda Bernier, a Madison resident since 2006, and member of the North Madison Volunteer Fire Co., is not only battling the challenges of motherhood. She is fighting a battle with ALS--Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Lou Gehrig’s Disease, in a very advanced stage.
Diagnosed just days after finding out she was pregnant with her first child, Bernier and her husband Chris, fellow firefighter and EMS Director at Madison Emergency Medical Services, are raising little Arabella while Amanda is battling her disease, The Shoreline Times reports.

The Madison mother and health advocate, known across the nation for her brave battle, currently is bedridden, requires care 24/7, can no longer walk, talk or move, The Times reports. She communicates through eye movement and a special program on her tablet.
Her husband Chris takes care of both mom and baby, along with the help of a nurse and babysitter.
