Former Madison First Selectman Gus R. Horvath Dies At 94

Horvath served as First Selectman from 1987 to 1991.

MADISON, CT — Former Madison First Selectman Gus R. Horvath passed away on Jan. 2, 2025, at the age of 94, according to town officials.

Horvath served as First Selectman from 1987 to 1991, and is being remembered for his commitment to Madison and to public service.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 18 at St. Margaret Church, 24 Academy St., Madison.

The Town of Madison issued the following statement on his passing:

It is with great sadness that I note the recent passing of former Madison First Selectman Gus R. Horvath on January 2, 2025, at the age of 94. In addition to being a loving husband, father, and grandfather, Gus was truly committed to public service and the Town of Madison. A Madison resident since 1964, Gus was involved with numerous civic organizations and served on many Town boards and commissions for over 50 years. Notably, from 1987 to 1991, Gus proudly served as First Selectman and was also elected to serve on the Board of Education and Board of Finance. After leaving public service, Gus continued to provide advice and counsel to many future First Selectpersons and Boards on a range of important issues impacting the quality of life in Madison. His contributions to Madison are numerous and our Town will greatly miss his inspiring example.

Our sincerest condolences go out to his family during this very difficult time. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Margaret Church, 24 Academy Street, Madison. An avid reader and supporter of public libraries, donations in Gus’ memory can be made to the E.C. Scranton Memorial Library or H.C. Hull Library.
