Future Plans For Historic 'The Black House' Revealed

The owner of the property owns two well known restaurants in Madison.

MADISON, CT — William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty announced that a historic, Federal-style building in the heart of Madison has been renovated and will write its next chapter as a luxury condominium development, with the first condo now listed for sale with Madison agent Margaret Muir for $689,000.

The historic Dowd House, known locally as “the Black House,” is located at 875 Boston Post Road and was built in 1813. Renowned Connecticut Shoreline builder and restoration specialist William Plunkett restored the original structure and converted it into three unique modern condominium units.

Plunkett is well known in the community for constructing two local restaurants: Moxie in 2014 and Bar Bouchee in 2010. When Plunkett’s group acquired the Dowd House in 2014, there was speculation it would become another restaurant, given the builder’s history of past projects in town.

The house has been added on to several times in the past, with both a boxed bay window and 45 degree bay window installed when the building was home to the clothing store “Pipe the Side.”

Now “the Black House” will experience a new life, with attention to detail given to every aspect of construction and top of the line amenities added to ensure comfortable, care-free living. Unit No. 1 has 1,140 square feet of interior living space, as well as an impressive 1,050 square feet of private, fenced in exterior space. Each unit also comes with its own garage and storage area.

The kitchen features Fisher & Paykel appliances, wood cabinetry and a concrete topped center island. Two spacious bedrooms overlook the unit’s handsome private courtyard and electronic privacy shades are included in all rooms with blackout shades in the living area.

“The William Plunkett group has really brought this property back to life,” said Muir. “This is an opportunity like no other to own a piece of this region’s history and a home that is anchored in the town’s past. I am very proud to represent this listing.”
