How To Dispose Of Household Garbage & Hazardous Waste In Madison

Information from the Town of Madison:

MADISON, CT — Residents are reminded that it is illegal to dispose of household garbage, especially hazardous waste materials, in Town dumpsters and trash receptacles. If residents have not contracted with one of the local suppliers for the regular hauling of household garbage and recycling, they can dispose of household trash at the Guilford-Madison Transfer Station located at 1900 Boston Post Road in Guilford, near the Guilford Commons. Please visit the Transfer Station website for days/hours of operation.

At the Transfer Station residents can dispose of food scraps and single-stream recycling materials for FREE. The town recently changed to a Pay-as-You-Throw system for household waste utilizing pre-paid town-designated blue bags. Bags are available for purchase at Ring’s End Lumber and Stop & Shop in Madison, as well as Page Hardware and Big Y in Guilford.

At the Transfer Station, residents are required to dispose of their household waste in the town-authorized bags, which come in various sizes to suit different needs. Prices are as follows:

  • 15 Gallon: $1.50 per bag, Light Blue Bag
  • 33 Gallon: $3 per bag, Light Blue Bag
  • 8 Gallon Food Scrap bag: $0.20 per bag, Green Bag

Do you have old paint cans to dispose of? Check with the local hardware stores to see if they are a paint collection site where you can drop your paint cans off for no charge. Typically there is a limit of five (5) one-gallon cans per day.
