Madison Arts Cinema Owner Gives Zoners LED Marquee Light Show
The new sign showed movie displays in color but it was quickly switched to black and white after owner was told it violated town rules.
MADISON, CT - Town officials were recently given a light show by Madison Arts Cinema owner Arnold Gorlick as the movie theater owner showed officials several different color schemes on his recently installed LED movie marquee sign.
The display was part of a special meeting called by the Planning and Zoning Commission.
The commission and Director of Planning and Economic Development David Anderson were the ones who directed Gorlick to stop displaying the sign in bold, color LED words earlier this year after the sign was first installed, stating that when Gorlick got approval to put the sign up there was nothing in the approval that allowed color lighting.

At the time, Gorlick said that he didn’t realize the sign would display in color when it was lit up instead of black and white.
He was told to put the letters back into black and white form, which they have been for months now, until he filed for an application asking for an exception.

On May 23rd, the commission held a “site walk,” and Gorlick gave a demonstration.
According to the minutes of the meeting, the commission members and Anderson stood across the Boston Post Road, as Gorlick gave the display.
The minutes said: “Mr Gorlick programmed the marquee to transition through the current black and white format, two formats that utitlize a poster image as the background, an animation of the flag, and a video.”
The minutes said that Anderson asked Gorlick if he wished to show the commission different font colors and types.
Gorlick then reprogrammed the marquee to display a small amount of test in red and green, again according to the minutes.
PZC Chairman Ronald Clark said the commission would discussion their thoughts on the presentation at an upcoming meeting - and proceed for there.
