Madison Church's Drag Queen Bingo Night Draws Controversy

The event will raise funds for a youth service trip to Appalachia to repair homes in poor communities.

MADISON, CT — A Drag Queen bingo night scheduled for this weekend at First Congregational Church of Madison sparked controversy.

The event will raise money for a youth service trip to Appalachia to repair homes in poor communities. The church released a statement that said organizers met with performers to ensure the program is fun and family-friendly. The performers are donating their time.

“We are all so anxious and suffering - often unconsciously- from the massive losses and upheavals of the last few years," Rev. Sarah Vetter, minister of community life said. "For some this Drag Queen Bingo is a lightning rod for that tension, fear and anxiety. For others it is a balm of acceptance, joy and community. We offer this event as a healing hopeful experience, knowing that some judge it from the outside as a hurtful thing. May the Holy One work in all of our spirits to bring healing to our troubled hearts and all that divides us.”
