Madison Downtown Business Owners Responsible For Own Snow Removal

MADISON, CT - At least for the forseeable future, the town of Madison will no longer be removing snow from the new sidewalks in front of businesses downtown.
At the most recent Economic Development Commission meeting, EDC Chairman Ryan Duques noted that when the Madison downtown center project was completed last year the town made a decision to provide for snow removal last winter "to protect the investment that had been made."
It was also determined, Duques noted, that having the town provide for snow removal last year would make the pathways uniform. Special equipment was purchased by the town to protect the brick sidewalks as the snow was being removed.

In a follow-up interview with Patch, Duques said: "For now, the town has stopped the temporary removal of snow, reminding building and business owners that there is a town ordinance (Section 19-1(b)) in place that requires the snow be removed from the sidewalk in front of their building. "
Duques said he "would like to further explore how the removal of snow can be completed by, or coordinated by the town ongoing, in future years."

The EDC has requested, he said, "that we remain part of the conversation and communication going forward so that we can help provide a desirable place to do business."
