Madison Extends Cannabis Retail Sale Moratorium
Elected officials extended the moratorium in order to have more time to study the issue.
MADISON, CT — The Madison Planning and Zoning Commission extended the town’s moratorium on cannabis dispensaries until July 1.
The moratorium was set to expire Dec. 31, but members of the commission unanimously voted to extend it during a December meeting, according to meeting minutes.
State law gives towns wide latitude about whether they want to allow recreational dispensaries within their borders. Towns also have the option to pass temporary moratoriums in order to study the issue further. Some towns, such as Milford, don’t allow recreational sales, but do allow medical sales.

Retail recreational cannabis sales began Tuesday, Jan. 10 at seven dispensaries throughout the state. More medical dispensaries are anticipated to convert to hybrid status in the near future. Eventually, dispensaries approved through the state's lottery and social equity programs will also come online.
