Madison Farmer's Market Stalwarts Shine Despite Andrea

It was the kind of day that just made you want to curl up and go back to sleep. With the rain from Andrea and other fronts pounding the East Coast, who could blame the Madison Farmer's Market for canceling?

Yes, the heavy rains posed a threat to the pies, the soaps and other goodies so carefully prepared by the vendors. And so, early afternoon on Friday, the market organizers decided to call it off for this week.

Still, there were two vendors who would not be deterred. Thank you Suzanne Sankow and Victoria Filinol from Sankow Beaver Brook Farm in Lyme, CT and Alberto Hernandez from Highland Thistle Farm in Canterbury, CT.

And yes, they were rewarded by at least a few customers. The Cook's from Madison were in search of kale, and they were not disappointed. Diane Hansard from Guilford loaded up her shopping bags as well. "I wouldn't miss it," she declared.

There was even a local celebrity here. I won't say who. You skipped it, you missed it. Throughout the afternoon and early evening, there was a steady trickle of customers making their way to the two tents, customers clad in slickers and boots, umbrellas in hand.

A little rain? This is New England. Since when did we let that stop us from doing anything? Thank you Suzanne, Victoria, and Alberto. Because of you my friends were treated to some great local produce and cheese Friday night.

The full MFM gang is due back next Friday, weather allowing. They will be off Friday, June 21st due to DHHS graduation, and then back after that for the summer.
