MADISON, CT – With the cost of the new elementary school going up between $5.9 million to $7.5 million, Madison’s Board of Selectmen has issued a special town meeting to appropriate $2.4 million from the town’s unassigned balance.

Madison’s Board of Selectman special town meeting to appropriate the $2.4 million is scheduled for July 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Town Campus, Room A, 8 Campus Drive.

The shortfall came after revising the cost estimates for the new school construction to include the design development plan and additional classrooms.

The Board of Selectman approved to call the special town meeting on June 12.

During the Board of Selectman’s June 26 meeting, Peggy Lyons, First Selectwoman, said the project has a shortfall between $5.9 million to $7.5 million based on the design plan put together, and a lot of the cost is due to inflation.

In addition to the $2.4 million, Lyons told the board an additional $3.485 million was needed to cover the shortfall.

To make up the $3.845 million, the Board of Selectmen approved to transfer the funds needed from the Polson Project to the new school project during their June 26 meeting.

Lyons told the board the Polson Project is still left with a $1.5 million surplus which would allow the town to have enough funding for auditorium upgrades and modernizing the HVAC system.
