Madison Voters Approve of Town and School Budgets

Madison residents showed their support for the town and school budgets at referendum this Tuesday.

Voters in Madison approved on Tuesday a $77,794,313 budget at referendum for the 2015-16 fiscal year, according to the New Haven Register.

More than $23 million goes to the town’s operations, which is an increase by 3.16 percent from the current town budget, while over $53 million goes to the school budget, which is a 2.49 percent increase, the article reported. The budget reflects a total 2.7 percent increase from this year’s budget.

There was about an 11.7 percent voter turnout for the budget elections, which is higher than the 7 percent voter turnout from last year, according to the article. The vote was 1,053 in support versus 419 opposing the budget.

The town budget increase will go toward capital projects, which also contributed to the budget increase from last year, the article reported. The school budget increase will go toward salaries and benefits for employees, as well as the continuation of current curriculum initiatives.
