Meet The Selfors, A Family On The Run

"When driving in Old Saybrook, keep an eye out at every intersection…. this wonderful family just might be crossing right in front of you!"

This story was written and reported by Ashton Edwards. It was posted to Madison Patch by Local Editor Pem McNerney.

Each year that the Exchange Club of Madison holds its annual Leprechaun Race Day, a new cross-section of performance athletes hit the finish line about whom sensational stories seem to emerge.  The 2013 story is certainly centered upon The Selfors’ Family from Old Saybrook.

What they did on Sunday March 24th

To say The Selfors almost owned the 21st Leprechaun 5 Miler this year is but a slight exaggeration.  The aggregate statement of fact is that all four Selfors completed the five-mile race in the top 19 places with stellar individual performances of:

• Bridgid (#261) claiming 9th place overall (1st in the 13-19 division and most impressively the 2nd woman   overall);

• Dillon (#263) in 15th and Conor (#264) in 19th (finishing 5 seconds apart and in first-second place in 12-under division); and

• Brian (the Father) in the middle of his two sons crossing the line in 17th place.

Looking at it another way, three kids 13 and under and their Dad ran a race and finished in the top 19 places out of 450 total runners!  That translates into a fact statement that The Selfors all finished in the top 4% of all Racers!  With ABC bringing back the once renowned Superstars program this summer, the Selfors deserve to be considered even though as of this writing they’re but “amateur” runners.

The Selfors’ CT Life
.

The family has lived in Old Saybrook for six years.  Brian is the Director of Sales for Pratt & Whitney based in Glastonbury.  Obviously, the children go to school with Bridgid in 8th grade, the two boys in 6th and 4th respectively, and the youngest daughter Margaux in 2nd grade.

The Selfors Family became racers through the influence of Brian’s commitment since high school, and his kids would watch him perform during weekend road races.

As they grew up, the children progressively began fun runs on their own, and eventually qualified/became interested in the longer distance races.  And they didn’t wait very long to take up the bigger races (e.g. Bridgid’s first race was the Clinton Bluefish 5K when she was just 8 years old.)

It’s a running tale in progress:  the kids like to run after school, and as a family they take off down the shoreline roads together on the weekend.  Future plans call for Bridgid to run for Mercy High School next year; not to be left behind at the starting gate, Margaux at 8 years old has her sights set on doing her first 5K this summer.

Who knows…in just a few years she might finish ahead of her brothers and sisters when the goes off in the 23rd Leprechaun 5M. …stand by!

Old Saybrook Launches its Support.

Although Leprechaun Race Day is set at The Surf Club in Madison, and is a Fund-Raising Event by the Exchange Club of Madison to raise money for the five Child Abuse Centers throughout CT, the word about The Selfors Family Racers didn’t take long to become known at STAPLES (St # 806) in Old Saybrook.

No sooner had the race been completed, one of the Exchange Club photos of the Selfors Family participation in the 21st Leprechaun 5 Miler had been blown up and posted inside STAPLES for all to see…

And, once the enlargement had been seen for about a week in the STAPLES Copy Center, a presentation of this wonderful family photo was made to the entire Selfors Family Racers by Jen Gaskell, General Manager of STAPLES in Old Saybrook and George Davis, President of the Madison Exchange Club.

One Final Special warning:  When driving in Old Saybrook, keep an eye out at every intersection…. this wonderful family just might be crossing right in front of you!
