MADISON, CT — As the 2023 municipal elections get closer in Madison, there are plenty of races with candidates eager to serve in elected office.

Madison Patch asked candidates to answer questions about their campaigns and will publish candidate profiles as Election Day draws near.

Al Goldberg, 76, is running for a seat on the Board of Selectman in Madison as a Democrat Candidate.

Goldberg holds a B.A. from Johns Hopkins University and an MBA from the University of Chicago. Goldberg is a hospital executive and a community activist.

Goldberg’s family includes his son, a sustainability officer at a major university; his daughter, an associate clinical professor of medicine and is a grandfather of three.

Have you ever held a public office, whether appointive or elective?

Madison Board of Finance 2005-2007; Madison First Selectman 2007-2009. Madison Selectman 2007-2023.

Why are you seeking this office?

I want to continue to retain and sustain the values we cherish. I want to continue to shape and build consensus for our future. I want to enhance Madison both now, and for those who follow.

Please complete this statement: The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is ___, and this is what I intend to do about it.

Orienting municipal government so as to permanently align with this community’s values. We need to solidify the expectation of collaboration, attention to due process, respect for the spirit of our Town Charter, tri-board collegiality, and the graciousness of listening, openness, and kindness.

What are the major differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?

My demonstrated commitment to this community as evidenced by many decades of public service; demonstrated success in finding ways to move forward, even on the most difficult issues; a proven record in building consensus; and a notable respect for the wisdom of the voters.

What other issues do you intend to address during your campaign?

Further orienting our municipal government toward enhancing our quality of life, encouraging civic engagement, and embracing our hopes and dreams.

What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?

I have an 18-year record of demonstrating that I have been effective in role of Town Selectman.

What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?

Do Justly, Love Mercy, Walk Humbly.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about yourself and your positions?

I have been active in the governance of numerous not-for-profit organizations and foundations.
