Why do you believe the star student athlete should be recognized?

Lucy moved to Madison, starting at the high school as a new sophomore. Though she had played field hockey, basketball and softball in her previous school for 4 years, she decided to try a couple of new sports at Daniel Hand: volleyball and lacrosse. She has since learned both sports and not only contributes as a player, but her team spirit earned her the Daniel Hand Varsity Girls Volleyball Tiger Pride 2021 award her junior year. As a senior, she is Co-Captain of the Volleyball Team. Given the team’s challenging schedule and 5-10 record this year, Lucy’s infinite encouragement, support, and "fight to the finish" attitude have helped the team earn 2 recent wins over teams who had beaten them earlier in the season and are ranked significantly higher than them in the SCC division.

Chris Farrell, the Director of DHHS Athletics, forwarded a recent email from the official of a Hand vs. Cheshire volleyball match which recognized Lucy’s exhibition of good sportsmanship for her honesty during a call that ultimately gave the other team the point.

Not only is Lucy an athlete, but she has proven herself in the classroom as well. She has consistently earned either honors or high honors each trimester since sophomore year, has been selected as a member of the National Honor Society, won third place in the John Sexton Essay Contest, and earned the Golden Tiger Award, "In recognition of (her) school and community involvement and for exhibiting all of the school spirit embodied in a Daniel Hand student."

TJ Salutari, Principal of DHHS, has met regularly with Lucy for the past two years, as she is one of two Student Representatives to the Board of Ed.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star student athlete?

She brings out the best in her teammates and classmates.

Keep up the great work, Lucy!
