MADISON, CT — Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, known for its beautiful shoreline, is among the most-visited state parks in the United States, according to a new listing by Travel + Leisure magazine.

Travel + Leisure crunched data from Google Maps to come with the list, which resulted in Watkins Glen State Park in New York in the #1 slot.

"While national parks often get the spotlight, state parks—also protected areas determined at the state level—offer equally stunning landscapes and easy access to local beauty," the magazine's story reads.

Hammonasset Beach State Park, at 1288 Boston Post Road in Madison, came in at #6 on the list. The waterfront site is the only state park in Connecticut to make the list.
