Vote Eyed for Leasing Madison School to Our Lady of Mercy

Catholic school supporters are working to keep a school in Madison and have set their sights on the Island Avenue School slated for closing.

MADISON, CT - A tentative town meeting vote on leasing the soon-to-be closed Island Avenue School to supporters of keeping the Our Lady of Mercy in Madison may be held in early July.

Shortly after it was announced several months that Our Lady of Mercy would be closing its Madison school and merging in Branford with St. Mary School, a large group of OLM parents and supporters began efforts to try and start up a new Catholic school in Madison.

The group is planning to break with local parishes and function as an independent Catholic school.

Dear OLM Community,

We’re pleased to share that the conversations with the two Madison Selectmen who were appointed to work with OLM regarding the potential lease of Island Avenue School have been going well. We continue to have productive conversations at our regularly scheduled meetings.

At our meeting this morning, the Selectmen set a tentative date of July 11, 2018 for the Town Meeting to vote on the lease. This is a tentative date; we will be sure to share an update as soon as the date is confirmed.

We’re grateful to the Selectmen for working with OLM Prep on a path forward, and we’re thankful for all the families and community members who have supported us along the way. A vote to approve the lease of Island Avenue School to OLM Prep would mean a lot to many families in Madison and those who want to see education based on Catholic values continue in our town.

Because Island Avenue School will not be available until the 2019-2020 school year, we are continuing to pursue a temporary location in Madison for the coming school year. We hope to announce the temporary location in the next few weeks.

We will continue to update this group with developments as they occur.

Keep the faith,

The OLM Strong Team
