Well Known Madison Developer Has Plans for Luxury Condominiums

The owner of the "Black House" and Moxie restaurant has a new plan for Madison - to develop luxury condos on the Boston Post Road.

MADISON, CT - William Plunkett is well known in Madison for being the owner of the popular Moxie Restaurant on Wall Street and the owner of the infamous "Black House" on the Boston Post Road.

He's got a new plan - luxury condos - that he talked about at the most recent Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.

Plunkett said he has an option to purchase the "General's Residence" at 908 Boston Post Road, and the adjacent property at 916 Boston Post Road.

He wants to combine the two sites, and build nine, single-family style, 2-bedroom condos. He estimated they would sell from $700,000 to $800,000, maybe even up to $1 million for the top units.

Plunkett compared the idea to townhouses in bigger cities, where property owners would walk 100-to-200 feet toe their residences - as he is proposing a separate parking area and then footpaths leading to the individual units.

He said some design features would include the use of natural, old, weathered siding, metal roofing, a two-and-a-half story breezeway between units.

He estimated it would take about two years to build and it would be done in phases - if approved.

Director of Planning and Development David Anderson said for the project to move forward, a regulation amendment would be required.

Anderson said that the proposal would be "a good development for the downtown, and it encourages alternative housing in the community."

Anderson said he would work with Plunkett on a regulation amendment that would be presented to zoners.

Eventually there would public hearings held when and if the application is filed for the development.
