MANCHESTER, CT — Cycling Without Age Manchester Wednesday announced that it has been awarded a $5,000 grant to support an inclusion project.

The funding was awarded by the Manchester Greater Together Community Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving as part of its 2024-2025 round of grants to nonprofit organizations serving the Manchester community. The funding will be used to purchase "The Able Table," an accessible picnic table from RiseUP for Arts, designed to accommodate the needs of people of all ages and abilities.

The Able Table will feature accessible seating and will be located outside RiseUP' for Arts office in Charter Oak Park.

The table is designed to provide "a welcoming space for everyone," including wheelchair users and families with young children.

It will also serve as a "canvas" for a community mural," organization officials said. RiseUp for Arts artists will host a community meeting to discuss the mural's focus, "ensuring that the artwork reflects the community's vision and values." After a plan is adopted, an artist will paint the table, creating a vibrant and inclusive community mural.

Matt Conway, Executive Director of RiseUP for Arts said, "We are thrilled to partner with UR Community Cares to get Manchester's first Able Table into the community. It’s not only necessary and practical seating, it’s also a symbol of inclusion and accessibility that makes everyone feel welcome. By adding this table to the park, we aim to set a new standard for inclusive community spaces, ensuring that every community member feels comfortable, included, and valued. This project exemplifies our dedication to creating environments where everyone can gather and enjoy the outdoors."

Michelle Puzzo, the executive director, of UR Community Cares, added, "In addition to the picnic table, we will encourage older adults, kids, and families to stay hydrated by offering water for a small charge during our program operations. We want to show everyone how water can boost energy levels, support active lifestyles, and promote overall health. Currently, there is no access to water in the park, and people are often looking for drinks. By providing water, we aim to encourage healthier choices and ensure that everyone stays hydrated."

Sales will be used to raise funds.

Added Puzzo, the co-founder of UR Community Cares, "We are incredibly grateful for this grant, which will allow us to create a truly inclusive and welcoming space in Charter Oak Park. The Able Table and the community mural will not only enhance the park's accessibility but also bring people together, fostering a sense of belonging and community pride."
